Bring to the King (Westwood) – D major

One of my own compositions for All Age worship. This is a processional for Palm Sunday. There is a touch of New Orleans about this that I hope is brought to light clearly in the clarinet part. Words and chords follow the links to the parts.

Brightest and best (Epiphany Hymn) – D major

A famous hymn for Epiphany. A horn part written for my son Andrew to play at some service or other.

Brightest and Best (Epiphany Hymn) – Horn

Before the throne of God above (V Cook) – D major

Ms Cook’s song has been a favourite for many years. I am not sure why I only have a clarinet part for this. I will remedy the situation.

Before the throne of God above – Clarinet

Be thou my vision (Slane) – D major

The famous Irish tune in 4 parts, the instruments being those available on the day.

Be thou my vision – Violin 1

Be thou my vision – Trumpet in C

Be thou my vision – Trumpet in Bb

Be thou my vision – Violin 2

Be thou my vision – Flute

Be thou my vision – Bassoon

Be bold! Be strong! (Chapman) – C major

A lively children’s chorus.

Be bold Be strong – Horn

Be bold Be strong – Bassoon

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow (Camberwell) – C major

A wonderfully martial hymn tune. I enjoyed writing a Sousa-like counter-melody for high instruments to play above the march.

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow – Clarinet

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow – Violin

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow – Trumpet in Bb

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow – Flute

As the deer pants

This lovely gentle song as a harmonic link to Pachelbel’s very famous Canon. When asked to arrange it for a family wedding, I took advantage of this. The voices come in after 8 bars after the bassoons have played the ground bass and the trumpets have given a reminder of the tune.

The score and an mp3 of the orchestration are found below. The instruments are those I had access to on the joyous day.

As the deer pants for water – Full Score

As the deer – Trumpet

As the deer – Flute

As the deer – Bassoon

As the deer – Violin

As the deer – Violin top

As the doe longs for cooling streams (Pulkingham) – B minor

Betty Pulkingham put this famous psalm into B minor (Sounds of Living Waters). We sang it at the Advent service at Christ church in 1994 at a time of much soul-searching in South Africa. This is my arrangement for that occasion, including the choir parts.

‘As a deer pants for water’ is another song based on Psalm 42. You can find my arrangement with its nod to Pachelbel’s Canon here.

As a Doe longs for cooling streams – Choir

As a doe longs for cooling streams – Trumpet

As a doe longs for cooling streams – Clarinet in Bb

As a doe longs for cooling streams – Clarinet in A

As a doe longs for cooling streams – Violin

Angels Praise Him (Little Barrington) – D major

This wonderful bright hymn is not much sung these days. A pity!

Angels praise him – Trumpet

Angels praise him – Trumpet

Angels praise him – Flute

And he shall reign for ever (Kendrick) – D major

One of Graham Kendrick’s more rhythmic songs, with emphases just off the beat to keep the instrumentalists on their toes:

And he shall reign for forever – Horn

And he shall reign for forever – Flute

And he shall reign for forever – Violin

And he shall reign for forever – Recorder
